Low-viscosity orange thread sealant — tapered, straight, and readjustable.
Vibra-Seal 517 is the low-viscosity member of the orange Vibra-Seal family — the grade for automotive and industrial thread sealing applications where the thread fit is normal, the sealant needs to work on both tapered and straight thread forms, and the assembly may need to come apart for service.
The 517 formulation is a water-based, low-viscosity sealant that dries to a resilient, non-curing film on the thread surface. Low viscosity means the film flows into standard-clearance threads — NPT tapered fittings, straight-thread hydraulic connections, adjustment screws, and similar applications where the thread geometry does not present an unusually large gap. For assemblies with looser tolerances or larger leak paths, the 516 (high-viscosity) grade delivers the same constant-torque and GM-NA performance in a thicker, gap-filling formulation.
517 provides excellent solvent resistance alongside its sealing and locking functions — maintaining seal integrity against automotive fluids, hydraulic oils, and common solvents encountered in powertrain and chassis assemblies. The constant-on torque characteristic means the fastener or fitting runs down at consistent, predictable torque under both normal installation and vibrational loading in service. The non-curing film allows readjustment — adjustment screws can be backed out and re-tightened, gauge fittings can be repositioned, and sensor connectors can be replaced without stripping the sealed surface.
517 is the low-viscosity GM-NA variant in the Vibra-Seal line — the grade domestic automotive prints specify when they call out “Vibra-Seal” without a viscosity qualifier. When a print does specify viscosity, the choice is clear: 517 for standard fits, 516 for gap-fill. When no viscosity is specified on intake, confirm with the engineering desk. Orange is the universal color signal for both grades — in mixed-SKU production environments the grade number (516 vs 517) is the only visual differentiator, so label control matters.
